    23/05/2019 Duração: 56min

Per the QDMA Whitetail Report, hunters pursue whitetail deer more than any other species and whitetail hunters contribute financially more than any other hunter segment.  Whitetails are the foundation of the hunting industry.  Because of this impressive impact QDMA releases an annual report that goes deep into data and identifies trends that affect the whitetail's world and the hunters that hunt them.  We thought that it only appropriate to invite Kip Adams back to discuss the highlights of this year's report, as we did last year.  We plan to make it an annual event.  OUR SPONSORS:  Rackology, Minus 33 Merino Wool,  Covert Scouting Cameras, Grizzly Ears,  QUIETKAT,  BIG BUCK MERCH   DISCOUNT CODES: Minus 33 10% OFF: BIGBUCK33 QuietKat 15% OFF: BIGBUCK15 Deer News Here's What We Discuss: Data from 2017-2018 Hunting Season NE, SW, MidWest, West, Canada 72 Pages, Just the Highlights 11th Annual Report, Age Structure 35% of Bucks, 15.5 Years, Different from Year's Past 33% Across the Board A Cultural Deer Huntin

    05/05/2019 Duração: 01h38min

We've focused a bunch on the bow shot, but perhaps we over looked the long range rifle shot. Unless you've had the need to take a 700 yard kill shot, you may not realize how much information is needed to calculate a well placed bullet.  The science is fascinating and the apps are endless. To clear this up, we invited long range hunter and shooting competitor Anthony Stallone to break it all down before you squeeze the trigger on your next long range target. 274 Harmon Carson - Bowhunting Big West and the Bayou

    07/04/2019 Duração: 01h50min

Although Harmon Carson is known as the Bayou Bowhunter, he sharpened his  bowhunting skills in the in the mountains of Colorado.  Harmon credits his dad for lots of his skills, but not necessarily in the traditional father/son teaching sense.  In many cases, Harmon learned to hunt because his father would escort him into the woods, but from then on he was on his own to learn the rest - methods that might not fly today. Nonetheless, those lessons made Harmon one heck of a good bowhunter - no more gun, no more compound, just straight up traditional bowhunting. Harmon says, learn to hunt first and the weapon you choose becomes irrelevant. J.C. Hall might not be on the trigger most of the time, but he's hunting all the time.  When he does hunt for himself, it's a quality over quantity kind of thing.  These days J.C. is frequently on tour with the likes of country singer Aaron Lewis where he's running the camera or editing for the show On the Road Outdoors.    J.C. says he's always hunting in a sense because the footage needs capturing and he doesn't want to be the guy to mess up the hunt. 270 The Bearded Butcher - Seth and Scott Perkins - Jerky and Dry Aged

    03/02/2019 Duração: 01h32min

The Bearded Butchers, otherwise known as brothers Seth and Scott Perkins, grew up learning butchery as part of the family business butchering domestic livestock. They carried their knowledge into the hunter's world by hunting for and butchering all types of wild game. And what goes great with meat?  Spices!  So the brothers ventured into the spice business which grew it's now infamous label from their bearded father and namesake inspired by membership at a local beard club.  Their spices are all natural, free of sugar, MSG, and anti-caking materials and the brothers' deer processing YouTube videos about how to correctly process and age venison has gone absolutely viral.  In this show, we explore all the Bearded Butcher secrets to successful deer processing, how jerky can break down deer hunting barriers, and how you can do it too.   SPECIAL OFFER FROM QUIETKAT TO OUR LISTENERS-  USE CODE: BIGBUCK15 to Receive 15% Off Your Order OUR SPONSORS:  Rackology, Covert Scouting Cameras, QUIETKAT,  BIG BUCK MERCH   Her

It's been 4 years since we last visited with our friends at Major League Bowhunter.  Every conversation we've had with their crew has lead to some deep thinking related to hunting, industry challenges, and solutions to keep hunting alive for generations to come.  According to Matt, due to some legislation and some economic factors relative to agriculture in Mississippi, the Mississippi deer hunting has never been so good.  We reflect on Matt's 2018-2019 deer season and then we turn to Brandon Adams, a long time MLB crew member, and learn how he prepared for a season he called the Oklahoma Slam which involved taking one of each of the 5 big game species in Oklahoma in a single hunting season using over the counter tags available to anyone. 268 The Tree Harness - Tethrd - Greg Godfrey - Hunt Tech Part VIII

    06/01/2019 Duração: 01h42min

The arborists are probably the first to harness the power of the tree harness, but what about the rock climbing community? According to Greg Godfrey from the tree harness company Tethrd, we need to give credit to each. And that's pretty much how his company got its roots - it's a deer hunter meets arborist meets rock climber kind of story. Greg says that due to the demand to pack lighter to get to your favorite deer hunting spot without sacrificing safety or the ability to hunt from a tree, Tethrd was born. Tethrd isn't the first tree harness company, but they are perhaps the first to focus on this method of hunting that's been around for quite a while and really make some innovative advancements. We discuss with Greg the products that Tethrd offers, how to use them effectively, and how their system can safely make you a lighter more mobile deer hunter. 267 The Electric Hunting Mountain Bike - QuietKat - Adam Parr - Hunt Tech Part VII

    23/12/2018 Duração: 01h56min

It's hard to imagine that a bicycle would have anything to do with deer hunting.  For years we've relied on our vehicles- our trucks and our ATVs and our UTVs to get us deeper into the woods to our hunting spots.  But a bicycle? Well, turns out, with a little ingenuity from some outdoor enthusiasts and a re-design of the legendary mountain bike - fatter tires, better suspension, a motor, and a hardcore battery like what you'd find in the futuristic Tesla automobile, the all terrain electric bike was born.  We discuss in detail with QuietKat's Adam Parr how they engineered what is perhaps the most innovated electric all terrain bicycle on the market and how it will likely change the future of how hunters go quietly to and from their favorite hunting spots with the efficiency of the ATV. We continue our podcast mini-series of hunting technology on this episode with the cellular game camera.  Long gone are the days of film game cameras.  The standard game camera  now is digital with an SD card.  But now the cellular game camera is making strides in both quality and price point. Will this be the new standard soon?  Time will tell as everyone starts to accept and use the latest technology.  We thought we should explore the cellular game camera because everyone seems to want one but many don't know enough about them to jump in.  So we grabbed our good friend Kimber O'Dell from Covert Scouting Cameras to break it all down for us. 265 The Arrow and the Broadhead - David Hand - Slash Arrows - Hunt Tech Part V

    25/11/2018 Duração: 01h27min

Over the past 4 episodes of our Hunt Tech mini-series we've explored a deer movement prediction app with the Drury's and their new app called Deercast,  the on-demand action camera with Aaron Stonehocker from Tactacam, a game camera picture data processing system with Jon Livingston from DeerLab, and mapping and waypoint technology with Zach Sandau from OnX Hunt.  Now, we move onto the arrow and the broadhead with David Hand from Slash Arrows. The earliest evidence of the arrow launched from a bow dates back some 10,000 years and we've seen some amazing arrow and the broadhead advancements in technology since the aluminium arrow was first introduced.  Every year there seems to be a new innovative arrow and broadhead design and David Hand may have one of the most innovative designs in recent years.  We asked David to join us to explore all the innovations over the last 20 years, where things are today, and what the future of the arrow and the broadhead looks like for archery hunters. 11/11/2018 Duração: 01h24min

Remember when maps were on paper?  We use to spend money on paper topo maps and put a thumbtack on that map to represent a deer sighting, effectively creating heat map with multiple thumbtacks.  Then along came Google and Google Maps.  It was a revolutionary step forward in scouting technology, but there were some very important pieces missing from the Google map.  For one, we couldn't instantly in-the field in real-time tell where the boundary lines of property existed. Sure, we could spend hours looking at town survey maps, but nothing was instant.  And who the heck owned the property?  That was another game of tracking down slow information points.  These were all the challenges that Eric Siegfried, founder of OnX Maps had at one time.  All of the information was available, but not instantly on any single device in an organized manner when you needed it.  So, Eric set out to fix all that with his new company.  A decade later, with a subscription and smart phone or GPS you can instantly have access to all t

263 JON LIVINGSTON - Deer Lab - Hunt Tech Part III

    28/10/2018 Duração: 01h23min

By now in your hunting career you've probably used a game camera or two. As hunters we use game cameras to scout and gather information about deer movement.  Game camera pics can be deceiving though, for multiple reasons. For example, there could be a huntable buck in the area that just won't come to the camera.  Or, perhaps we get a picture of a buck, but the reason we think he's in the area might be relative to something completely different from what we thought.  Scientifically these examples could be considered a false negatives and a false positives.  Using a multiple camera system and gathering data points connected to weather  might be a better approach to determining when to hunt.  However, keeping track of data when using more than a couple cameras can be daunting and without keeping statistics correctly the degree of error goes up when determining the true pattern.  That's where Deer Lab comes into play.  Deer Lab takes game camera picture information thru photo recognition and time stamps and marri

262 Aaron Stonehocker - Tactacam - Hunt Tech Part II

    14/10/2018 Duração: 02h05min

On the last episode of Deer Hunt, we began our exploration of hunting technology with the Drury's new app called DeerCast.  We continue our series on hunting technology this time with the likes of Tactacam, a company who built what is perhaps the best deer hunting action camera on the market.  We've all been involved with hunts where we wished we had a camera to film it all but didn't.  And there's that occasion when we did have a camera, but the awkwardness of using the camera and taking the shot at the same time made for terrible footage.  There have been other action cameras on the market, but somehow, this small coming out of Minnesota has gotten top marks with hunters, probably because they thought through what the hunter needs most- a camera that can seemingly just  be part of the equipment -  conveniently hidden near the end of a barrel or within the stabilizer of a bow, and without duct tape, and can be activated with a push of the button.  Tactacam continues to reach new ground as it constantly attem

    30/09/2018 Duração: 01h33min

In the first part of our 6 Part Series of Hunt Tech, where we explore the technology that has embedded itself in our hunting lives, we dive deep into a new hunting app called DeerCast by Drury Outdoors.  For a very long time deer hunters have been trying to determine when deer move, what conditions make for a worthy deer hunt, and when should we as deer hunters capitalize on those factors.  We've spent hours and hours studying solunar charts, weather maps for pressure and cold fronts, and peak estrus diagrams for the areas that we hunt.  It can be a daunting task to put that all together.  The Drurys- Mark, Terry,  Matt, and Taylor have condensed all this information into one app for iOS and Android call Deercast to determine the best times to hunt in your area during each phase of the Drury 13 Phases of hunting.  Will it be effective? Only time will tell, but undoubtedly technology in the deer hunting world, like it or not, is here to stay.  So we thought we should explore in detail some of these tech advanc
